“Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.” - Exodus 34:28-29 NIV

When was the last time you spoke with the Lord?

I’m not asking for the last time you threw up a prayer as a last resort, I’m asking for the last time you had a conversation with God. A conversation involves two or more people communicating with each other, taking time to talk and time to listen. It’s easy to thank God for a beautiful day or ask Him for peace, but it’s not so easy to wait for a response. I was listening to a podcast the other day, and the guest said that she thinks people miss out on hearing God’s voice because He doesn’t shove his way into your thoughts. When God speaks, more often than not, it’s like a whisper. Maybe you’re walking down the hall and it crosses your mind that you should invite that angsty-looking kid to sit at lunch with you. Maybe you’re worshipping at the:hill and feel pushed to pray for the person on their knees in front of you. Maybe you’re reading your Bible and a certain verse jumps out in a whole new way. That’s God trying to communicate with you!

God is one with us through the Holy Spirit, which means He’s in our thoughts and our hearts. For some people, God does speak audibly, but sometimes He speaks in other ways. We serve a creative God, a God who customizes His interactions with His children because He made each of us unique. He knows you. He knows what you need to hear, and He knows how you need to hear it. He wants to communicate with you, because He created you for relationship with Him. He wants to see your perspective on life, and He wants to see what brings you joy. God wants to see you live your best life, one guided by His Spirit. Since He loves you so much, He won’t push Himself in where He’s not welcome. He’s a gentleman, and if the door to your heart is locked, He’ll wait for it to open.

So maybe a better question is, when was the last time you let yourself encounter God?

“We love because he first loved us.” - 1 John 4:19
